The Prophet

Responding to Denise at Girlie on the Edge Blog with the prompt word FILM https://girlieontheedge1.wordpress.com/2022/10/09/sundays-six-sentence-story-word-prompt-233/

Susan, strolled through the park looking for a quiet spot to eat her lunch, far away if possible from the picnicking families, and their noisy children playing tag, throwing balls, and indulging in their childish pastimes.

Spying a bench with an old man sitting on one end, she quickened her pace to claim the opposite end, before some intruder laid claim to the same prize.

The old man’s gaze was fixed firmly on the horizon, and she tried not to stare at the white opaque film covering his eyes; not that he was going to notice, she thought.

Seating herself in the opposite corner of the bench from the old man and unwrapping her sandwich she chewed mechanically, as she cast him tentative sideways looks.

Suddenly the old man shifted in his seat and intoned, ” There is a whiff of change in the air, a restlessness that refuses to recede, woe to them that remain in their ignorance and slumber because a reckoning is nigh”.

Susan, quickly re-wrapped her sandwich, and flew from the bench, thinking, isn’t there anywhere around here that I can get some peace and quiet to eat my lunch.

  1. as the old saying reminds us* ‘When the pupil is ready, the pupil is ready, the teacher appears’**

*totally going tangential on your Six’s plot
** am guilty as the others for taking a scene and extrapolating the plot, character, even setting***
*** this is, of course a compliment, as only an engaging Six provides such a fertile context
