“Oh, what the”, opening day at the pub and approaching the doorway I’m met with the tangy odour of piss clinging to the hot humid air, someone is using my pub as their public urinal.
I shouted at Ciaran to fetch a bucket of water with bleach and scrub the doorway entrance, also a bowl of lemon scented detergent to wipe down the door.
Turning to Fred I asked him to get security cameras on the entrance door, I wanted to know what was going on at night, although I knew the neighbourhood had deteriorated in the last three months since renovations had started, and homeless tents had started proliferating further down the street.
I had asked all the staff to turn up at 9:00 a.m. to go over every detail and ensure the pub was in tip top shape and ready to go at opening time 11:00 a.m.
Just before opening I told staff to select a drink of their choice and to hold up their glass so I could offer a toast to the hard work of the staff in preparing for opening day and to the future success of the Wily Trout.
So pub life begins, people coming and going, pouring out their hearts over a beverage of their choice, lonely people seeking companionship, dreamers staring into space wondering what the future will bring. and a warm cosy atmosphere to forget for a brief moment the outside world.
That’s so unpleasant when someone uses a pub, which was one day from being open, as a urinal. I’m glad that everything was cleaned up before the opening.
